Website Update – April 26, 2024

National Grid’s contractor, Posillico Environmental, Inc. (Posillico), is implementing interim remedial measure (IRM) activities at the K-Equity Works former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) Site to address MGP Site related impacts in accordance with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) approved design. The IRM activities are being performed at 222 Maspeth Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, with a support area across the street at 287 Maspeth Avenue. Mobilization began on June 26, 2023, with full time work activities starting on July 31, 2023. Community air monitoring and vibration monitoring are being conducted during this project.

Overview:

  • The key elements of the remediation work include:
    • Underpinning of certain site structures,
    • Removal of surficial concrete;
    • Shallow excavation;
    • In-situ soil stabilization / solidification;
    • Deep excavation under a temporary tent structure; and
    • Site restoration.
  • There are established measures to reduce potential noise, vibration, and dust from the work.
  • Air, noise, and vibration monitoring are being conducted each day to ensure that the work is conducted in accordance with the requirements of the NYSDEC, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and New York City (NYC). 

On-going activities:

  • Installation of temporary support along east wall at 222 Maspeth Avenue.
  • Soil excavation, materials import, and grading activities in support of holder contents removal work at 222 Maspeth Avenue.
  • On-site soil management of excavated soil, spoils, and debris in preparation for trucking loadout and off-site disposal.
  • Transportation (trucking) and offsite removal of excavated soil, spoils, and misc. debris at 222 Maspeth Avenue.
  • Air, noise, and vibration monitoring.

Recently completed activities:

  • Demobilization of in-situ soil stabilization / solidification equipment.  

Upcoming work activities:

  • Mobilization of temporary fabric structure (TFS) materials and support equipment.
  • Mobilization of temporary water treatment system.

Community Air Monitoring Plan Summary

Continuous community air monitoring is on-going.  For the period between 3/30/2024 – 04/26/2024, there were no measured readings above action levels associated with site activities for Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC). There were two isolated Particulate Matter (PM-10) exceedances on 04/01/2024 associated with emptying the reagent silos that were rectified using water applications.
